Welcome!

Panoramic night scene of PittsburghThe Mid-Atlantic Chapter and the Annual Meeting Committee invite you to Pittsburgh and the 2013 MAC Annual Meeting.  Renaissance on the Rivers, this year’s meeting theme, explores rebirth and revitalization.

Pittsburgh has revitalized itself into a combination of turn-of-the-20th-century architecture and modern skyscrapers. Once a smoke filled manufacturing city, Pittsburgh is now a city with outdoor activities on its rivers and parks, unique downtown shopping, many cultural venues and great dining.

The meeting will be held at the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel, a 1906 historic landmark, located on the Allegheny River, in the heart of Pittsburgh’s downtown and cultural district. The hotel was originally an office building, and later served as a WWII Veterans Hospital and a dance club called “Heaven” before its rebirth as a one of the only luxury four-star hotels in downtown Pittsburgh.

Dr. Andrew Watson, medical director of the Center for Connected Medicine (CCM), will start off the meeting on Monday morning. His work involves “developing the blueprint for innovative patient-centered and population health models using strategically integrated health information technology.” Leaders from the Medical Library Association, the National Library of Medicine, and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine’s Middle Atlantic Region and Southeastern Atlantic Region will each provide updates on their respective organizations. Lee Gutkind will speak to us on Tuesday. He is recognized by Vanity Fair as “the Godfather behind creative nonfiction.” His recent books include An Immense New Power to Heal: The Promise of Personalized Medicine and an anthology, At the End of Life: True Stories About How We Die.

In between these events you will have opportunities to be revitalized by learning from your colleagues during the poster and paper sessions. You’ll have time to chat with each other during lunch and breaks, as well as speak with the many exhibitors.

Our profession, much like our host city of Pittsburgh, is undergoing rebirth and revitalization with new ideas and new technology, while embracing what is best about our past. Join us October 13-15, 2013 at the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel, located near the convergence of three historic rivers, to explore our renaissance experience.
